UNI-T UT71C Review | Features

1- Ergonomics

This meter is not only sleek and visually appealing, but it’s also surprisingly sturdy. When we tried to twist the body, we didn’t hear any creaking! However, there are better options for someone rough with their tools.

Instead, it’s perfect for someone who spends most of their time on an electronic bench. One thing to note is that it has quite a few switches on the front plate – eight to be exact – with six providing multiple functions.

Getting to know all the features might take a bit of practice, but it’s worth it if you want to make the most out of your purchase. Oh, and one more thing – the ergonomic range switch emits a mildly annoying beep with each selection. But, hey, at least it’s easy to select!

What we love about this meter is its large LCD. It makes reading the results a breeze, and the two-step bright backlight makes it easy to see in low light conditions. That said, we have noticed that curved glass can increase reflections.

If you’re using it in a lab with multiple light sources, you should consider that. Other than that, the ergonomics of this multimeter are top-notch. It’s comfortable and easy to hold, making it a valuable addition to any toolbox.

2- Wide Range Of Features

With its true RMS 40,000 count ADC and speedy 4000 count option, this meter is built for accuracy and efficiency.

But what sets it apart is its display – with the ability to show three parameters at once and a handy ‘Hold’ function to cycle through different options, it’s perfect for Max/Min measurements and beyond.

And with the AC+DC measurement option available at the push of a yellow button, you’ll be well-equipped for any voltage and current measurements you need.

3- Safety

Regarding the UNI-T UT71C Multimeter, safety is a hot topic. And for a good reason! But don’t worry; this meter has some safety features. One 1.1K PTC and two current limiting resistors (1K and 100K) exist.

Plus, some discreet crowbar transistor circuits that can protect the meter up to 1000V are impressive! You’ll also find some aural warnings on the current jacks, which is great for helping you avoid making any dangerous selections.

And if you’re working with current ranges, you’ll be glad to know that two fast-acting glass fuses (10A and 500mA, respectively) are at your disposal. And that’s not all – the uA and mA ranges come with their diode bridge, complete with a Zener diode to clamp high voltages.

Remember that there is a low battery voltage warning, so heed that and avoid any sketchy measurements.

It’s not looking as certain as we thought. Independent safety organizations never tested the meter, which makes its rating of CAT III 1000V/ CAT IV 600V a bit questionable. It’s important always to prioritize safety when working with electricity and equipment.

So it might be wise to look for other options until we have more information on the UT71C’s safety. Better safe than sorry, right?

4- TrueRMS

You can be confident in your readings with its reliable accuracy of 0.025%+5 on the mV DC range and 0.05%+5 on Volt DC. The DC accuracy is respectable at 0.1%+15 on the mA/uA ranges, although the burden voltage may be a bit high for some at 5mV/mA on the 40mA range and 500uV/uA on the 400uA range.

Regarding resistance, the tolerance is 0.3%+8 up to 40kOhm and 1.2%+20 up to 400uF on caps. And if you need to measure frequency, the readings are usually spot on, at 0.01%+8 up to 40MHz. The UNI-T UT71C is worth considering for your next multimeter purchase.

But before you make the purchase, you need to know something.

AC measurements can be tricky when it comes to true RMS conversion. There’s a zone between 400mA and 1A where you can’t trust the reading. The meter is limited to 10% of its range, which means it can’t measure accurately in that range.

To make matters worse, no extra range covers the dead zone. This means you need to look elsewhere to measure AC in that range. On the bright side, DC measurements are unaffected, so you can still use the meter for other purposes.

Pros:

  • Temperature measurement, k-type
  • Works with UT-D07A Bluetooth adaptor
  • Interface cable usb and cd with software included
  • Beautiful and precise
  • Large display
  • Data logging feature
  • Low battery indicator

Cons:

  • Neither CAT III nor CAT IV up to 1000V
  • Missing MOVs and PTCs for device protection

Things That Are Unimpressive In UNI-T UT71C

While there are many impressive features that UNI-UT71C holds, some things could be more impressive. It doesn’t measure up to CAT III or CAT IV to 1000V standards.

And to make matters worse, it only has 250V fuses. Yikes. To top it off, this version isn’t even allowed in the European Union – it’s only intended for the Asian market.

And don’t even get me started because it needs MOVs and PTCs for protection. All in all, not the most impressive multimeter out there.
